View Article  Session 2
Hi All,,
It was an hectic week and I didn't had much time to update the blog.

Session 2 of the photo course was all about how light becomes data, so the more technical part of digital photography, and a introduction on settings and sensitivity, colour, focus and focal length, aperture, f-stops and shutter speed. All in all an enjoyable lesson with much to take in. The assignment was about taking photos about someone, some thing or some place you really like.

For me that was pretty easy and ask my wife to sit for a portret.  As usual I am using an ISO value of 200, which gives me a good quality and I don't need an higher value as this are static photos.

The weather was cloudy and we have a nice spot in the garden. The speed was 1/60 with an F 5.6.

As you can see we had some fun in doing this. I am not placing all the images I took here but only the photos I really like.

Till the next time

Hi,
the first assignment, which I have chosen, is to capture 6 letters which appear in your surroundings in things. I do this over the weekend as it becomes dark early these days.

My first letter is Y

The letter T, found this in a car park

The letter L, same car park

Here we have X

And the V

And the best M

This assignment was fun and looking forward to the next.

View Article  The course website is open
Yesteday the OU opened the website for the course and we were able to the first lessons, and to upload some pictures for everybody to see. One of the students was calculating how many picture the students would upload in the next 10 weeks.

We have 1500 students, yes 1500, who will upload around 10 pictures each per week for 10 weeks. This is 150.000 pictures in the next 10 weeks.

The course material looks very good and I will place the exercise photos in this blog and on my website. The first exercise is to take some photos of a bottle looking from a light, colour and position. This will give us three photos. I will try to do this during this week, although the course isn't started yet. Although the course is working with Photoshop Elements 5 some of the students, me included, will work in Photoshop CS3.

the first lesson is about interesting images and what that means. Of course this is different for everybody, but they try to develop your eye for this based on techninal and compositional qualities. there is a part of the lesson that goes about the rule of thirds (follow the link to see a description within Wikipedia).

That was it for today

View Article  Course pack received
Today we received the pack which contained of a DVD with lessons how to use Abobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, a cut-down version of Photoshop. A cd with the Photoshop Elements on it and a cd with the communication program First class. With this came a user guide for the Electronic TMA system. The course site goes live on Monday and I can't wait to start. On the test part of First Class I see fellow students appear and they all seem to have the same feeling.

Today, Saturday the 8th of September, I received the first documentation from the OU. This was the welcome pack, user id and password for the OU course website. I downloaded the First Class software, installed this and logged in to the student part. Did the usual tests to see if everything was working and must say that this was one of the easiest pieces to install.

Explored the student part of the website and discovered that the other course materials will be dispatched on the 24 September, so it is waiting for that now.

The cost where £ 165 which is not really much for a course that is recognised by The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) as suitable preparatory work and a foundation for a Licentiateship Distinction (LRPS) in still photography. For more information about this visit www.rps.org.

Now it is waiting until the workbooks arrive and the course start

Hi, This blog is dedicated to the course I am going to take at the Open University about Digital Photography. I am taking the course just for fun as I like to take photos and share them. You can visit my new site about photography at www.van-stratum.co.uk and have a look around. At this moment it is still bare but will grow over the next months.

I hope you will follow my path through the course and who knows maybe you will find it attractive to do this yourself.
